    Description

    1866 Type 3, Gold Dollar
    PCGS graded MS61
Early die state coin without die clashes typical for this date.
As Q. David Bowers states, "Nearly all circulation strikes show clashmarks. On many pieces these are heavy, especially on the reverse... Striae are seen on nearly all high grade coins, these being from the die-preparation process and especially prominent on early strikings". Garrett and Guth's "Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins" also echos the clash observation, "Severely clashed dies are also common for the date.".
