Description
For the Arnold Palmer fan who has (almost) everything! This is a very
unique autographed piece of memorabilia
:
Arnold Palmer’s autograph on the bottom of a golf (putting) trophy.
It is absolutely
guaranteed to be authentic
– I was right next to him as he signed it.
Read on. . .
The story:
in the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s, hundreds of Arnold Palmer putting courses sprang up around the country.
In the late 1960’s or early 1970’s, several of the course managers got together to put on a putting championship.
The tourney grew to where a good 30 courses from around the U.S. and Canada participated.
Each course sent their champion to the national finals.
I made it to the finals four years in a row; each time Arnold Palmer came to present the trophies and prizes and to talk with the contestants.
Since each participant had won his local tournament, we were all “champions” and each got at least a small trophy.
Those who placed first, second, or third, received bigger trophies and special prizes.
In 1973,
I was the national champion
, and Mr. Palmer was nice enough to sign the bottom of my gigantic trophy.
I’m quite sure that no other trophies were signed.
I finished third the year before (no trophies were signed), and seventh the year before that.
In this year that I placed seventh, a couple golfers asked Mr. Palmer to sign their trophy, and I was one of them.
Up for sale here is that smaller trophy I received which Arnold Palmer signed in my presence.
Since I subsequently won a huge autographed trophy for winning the national championship, I am willing to part with this smaller one if the price is right.
It is a VERY unique piece of memorabilia from the King himself.
The trophy is in pretty good shape, considering that it is almost 50 years old: there are no cracks, no chips, no loose parts, etc.
The beginning of the autograph has faded just a little, but it is still very clear.
The trophy is about one foot tall.
Hamilton watch was one of the sponsors of the tournament, and thus the plate on the trophy reads:
ARNOLD PALMER HAMILTON WATCH
1971 NATIONAL PUTTING TOURNAMENT
FINALIST
I have been in Washington state for a few years, but I grew up in Crest Hill, Illinois, near Joliet, less than a mile from the Arnold Palmer putting course.
In a letter to me some years ago, Mr. Palmer informed me that he knew of no Arnold Palmer courses still in existence (see attached pictures and letter).
